PETE AGUILAR: UNACCEPTABLE TO PLAY POLITICS AND FAIL TO ACT ON STUDENT LOANS

Congressman Miller supports conservative agenda that fails our students

(San Bernardino, CA) Today Congressional Candidate Pete Aguilar called on Congress to stop playing politics and pass a real solution to protect California college students and their families from outrageous increases in interest rates charged for student loans.

“To play politics and allow student loan rates to double is unacceptable. Having relied on student loans myself to get through college, I know first-hand how tough managing student loan debt can be for Inland Empire families. But Congressman Gary Miller and his fellow Republicans in Congress just don’t get it. They should be working to put higher education within reach of middle-class families, not make matters worse,” said Aguilar.

The Republican leadership in Congress, aided by Congressman Gary Miller, has pushed a flawed plan that fails to lock in low rates for students next year and eliminates safeguards for lower-income families.

“I am so disappointed in Congressman Gary Miller for standing by while interest rates double on my college loans,” said Toby Do, a Redlands native and a computer engineering student who just completed his first year at Cal State San Bernardino. “Paying for college has been a hardship for me and my family already.  Doubling the interest rate I have to pay could very well put my dream of a degree out of reach for good.”

If Congress doesn’t act by July 1st, federal student loan rates will double. The average student with federal loans will rack up an additional $1,000 in debt – the equivalent a $1,000 tax hike. The Federal Reserve has warned Congress that allowing student loan rates to double could jeopardize our economy.

“With the average student at our state universities taking on more than $15,000 in debt, we need a representative in Washington who will stand up for our students and their families by making college more affordable and accessible to everyone. A higher education is a ticket to the middle class and an important investment in our future,” added Aguilar.

Pete Aguilar (D) is a small business owner and Mayor of Redlands. He is a strong advocate for economic growth and fairness in the Inland Empire, a leader who has reached across party lines to serve the best interests of middle-class families.
